BUSINESS PLANS

Business plans are primarily written for two reasons; as a guide to starting and running your business successfully – basically a road map to follow; and second, as a document provided to financial institutions or other investors in order to secure capital financing, which will be necessary for the long-term success of your business.

A good business plan will define your business and identify your goals, among other things.  Your plan will consist of the following sections:

  • Mission, Goals & Objectives
  • General Description of the Business
  • Mission Statements
  • Goals and Objectives
  • The Industry
  • Business Structure, Management & Personnel
  • The Products/Services
  • The Market Analysis
  • Marketing Strategies
  • Worksheets and Notes to Cash Flow Projections
  • Cash Flow Projections
  • Financial Statements
  • Appendix Section

Potential lenders are particularly interested in your financial projections since they will show how you intend to repay any loans. They will use the rest of the information in the plan to ensure you can support your financials.

Another very important part of a business plan is answering the question, “What business am I really in?”  As silly as this may seem, it’s critical to the success of your business.  Without clearly defining exactly what you do, you may end up spending money growing a part of your business that isn’t bringing in any revenue.

The advisors at Guident Business Solutions have helped companies across a wide variety of industries develop business plans.   We can assist you with your business plan at various levels – from being available for questions or to review particular sections of your plan all the way to writing your business plan for you.

You may qualify for a grant to defray the cost of having someone write your business plan.  The grant is available through the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Network (“WEN”).  The Early Planning Grant (“EPG”) can help pay for 75% of the cost of the business plan, up to $3,000, providing you use a “preferred provider.”  Guident Business Solutions is a Department of Commerce preferred provider, which means you can use the EPG to help pay our fee for developing your business plan.

Please contact us for more information regarding the EPG, as well as other programs which may be available to you.
